Local Handicraft

Wood and tagua come to life in the hands of traditional craftsmen who uncover the secrets kept in these materials to convert blocks of fallen trees and seeds into food trays, playful dolphins, whales and other pieces of unmatched beauty.

Festivals

Local celebrations mix in the religious and pagan elements. The Virgen del Carmen Festival on July 15 and the Rooster Festival on July 20 are a rich mix of African ancestral culture and Catholic influence that make these merrymakings a cultural hybrid worthy of recognition. From December 16 to 24, the “arrullos” or African chants announcing the birth of Jesus are celebrated.

The People

On weekends, locals of Afro Colombian origin get together at the dance houses to unleash the rhythm that runs through their veins. Being there is a sight for visitors, as they are impressed by the Chocó folklore with all its authenticity, energy and flavor as they discover the hips that move to the rhythm of “chirimía”, “jota” and “bunde” and also to the music of the times.

Community and Culture

To 15 minute walk from the Lodge brings you to El Valle, a small settlement of Afro Colombian, indigenous and mestiza fishermen and handicraftsmen who all live together in harmony. When you visit this settlement you will be amazed at the joy, hospitality, and the respect of the people. You can feel the strength, rhythm, and intensity of the dark skin, as well as the ingenuity and ancestral wisdom of the Embera indigenous group.
